| Clubs CO-CURRICULAR PROGRAM 2011-2012 INTRODUCTION
The Co-curricular Program at OBJECTIVES OF THE CO-CURRICULAR PROGRAM 1. To provide the students with opportunities for active citizenship. 2. To supplement the curriculum in career exploration, athletics, hobbies, and school and community service. 3. To provide an opportunity for the development of desirable social interests, attitudes and etiquette. 4. To offer students and faculty the opportunity to work together outside the classroom. STUDENT ACTIVITIES
The Student Activities at The Student Government is the representative organization of the student body. Its responsibilities are broad in scope, as it serves as the central organization for all student activities. It is important that all students take an active interest in the affairs of the Student Government. Meetings are held both during and after school. The elections for Student Council officers are held prior to the closing of school in June. In September of each year all homerooms elect two representatives. A copy of the Student Government Constitution is included in this booklet for your reference. The Club Program offers a wide variety of interesting experiences. In September of the school year all students will be informed of the aims and activities of the Clubs. This is designed to encourage participation in the program. Students may join by attending the FIRST MEETING . The first meeting for many of the clubs will be the second to third week of school. Each club's sponsor will set up a meeting day. Most club meetings are held between 2:35 – 3:25 P.M. and meet one day a week Tuesday through Friday. There are a few clubs that due to their unique nature have evening and week-end activities. Students may participate in more than one club. The Intramural Sports Program is an extension of the Physical Education program and provides students with the opportunity for organized play on a competitive level within the school. The activities are conducted both before and after school. Students interested in participating in the program will be notified by an announcement from the sponsor of the activity as to the day, time and place for sign ups. Students who remain after school for activities and who are regularly transported by school bus may use the late buses that leave from the front of the school at 3:30 P.M. All students are welcome to participate in some phase of the co-curricular program. Participants are expected to conduct themselves in an exemplary manner. Sportsmanship, fair play and respect are key ingredients of proper behavior. It is a privilege to take part in these programs. Anyone failing to conduct themselves properly can lose this privilege. Mr. LoBue, Assistant Principal, is responsible for the functioning, administration and supervision of the Student Activities Program. All questions regarding activities should be directed to him. CLUB ROSTER
American Red Cross Babysitting (Ms. Hoppe ) This club at completion will give the students full American Red Cross certification as babysitters. The areas that will be discussed and taught include safety and first aid, growth and development, CPR, Heimlich maneuver and accident prevention. Art Club (Ms. Manz) This club comprises a variety of art forms and students projects. Students enjoy painting, drawing, clay etc, and also assist with some of the school’s activities when artistic assistance is needed. Backstage Support (Mr. Macaluso, Mrs. Hall, and Mrs. Farrell) This club assists the in all the facets of the drama performance throughout the year, by helping with set design, costumes, etc. as an important part of the drama performance in the spring. Chefs (Ms. Curatola ) This club is open to students interested in culinary delights. The first semester is devoted to the novice who would like to "whip-up" quick and simple delectables. The second semester is open to those students who are able and interested in going beyond the basics. Gourmet dishes that require time and some culinary experience will be planned and prepared. Chorus (Mr. Nalesnik) This activity is open to all students who are interested in group singing. Members will perform assembly programs in the winter and spring. Meetings will be held weekly after school. This is in addition to our Chorus program within school time. Computer (Mrs. D’Ambola ) This club is an extension of what the youngsters learn in their computer classes and is limited only by their imagination. Games as well as programs are very much a part of this activity. Digital Media – EB News (Ms. Moran)
This club gives students the opportunity to learn the basic of digital video editing and news broadcasting. Activities include taping and producing EBNEWS morning announcements, which are aired ever day on the East Brook inter-school television network. Digital Photography (Ms. Moran ) This club is an extension of the skills learned in the computer graphics cycles at East Brook. It focuses on the basic of digital photography and image editing using Adobe Photoshop. Students will learn everything from how to turn the camera on, to downloading and printing their high quality special-effects projects. Do Something Service Club (Mrs. Verhasselt) Do Something/Service Club believes you, the student has the power to make a difference. Join our group and help others. Be a generation of doers! Some of our activities include “Pennies for Puppies/Dollars for Dogs”, toy collections for sick, hospitalized children, cards for veterans, “Cookies for Children’s Cancer” and many others. Drama Workshop (Ms. O’Neil ) This club provides students with an opportunity for self-expression and improvement through the theater and its many facets. During weekly meetings, members will be involved in a variety of dramatic expressions. In addition to weekly club meetings, other activities include the presentation of dramatic or musical performances to the student body and parents during the year at assembly programs. Jazz Ensemble (Mr. Wall) This club consists of 7 th and 8 th students who enjoy jazz music and perform at various times and for different groups throughout the school year Math Counts (Mrs. Murray ) This club is for students who have an interest in mathematics and enjoy participating with other schools in math competitions. REACT (Mrs. Hammer/Mr. Nutland) This club’s mission is to promote good will, understanding and world peace through the active participation of its members so that with committed citizenship and effective leadership, they may improve the quality of life throughout the world. Renaissance Society (Ms. Grewe/Mrs. McQuade) This club is open to all students interested in participating in such cultural experiences as theater, music, art, gourmet dining and miscellaneous activities in and around String Ensemble (Ms. Gertel) This club consists of students who have an interest in string instruments and enjoy performing throughout the school year. Student Council (Mr. Aliano) This is the voice and decision making organization for the students. Student government is elected and is the “student” voice of the school. Student Newspaper (Mrs. Wiener) This club provides an opportunity for students interested in creative writing, art and business to put together a newspaper featuring school events. The newspaper comes out twice a year, and meetings are held weekly. Yearbook (Ms Manz / Ms. Moran)
This activity focuses on producing a book that serves as a lasting memento of a student's career at East Brook. Work is done throughout the year both during and after school. Positions on the staff are open to any 8th grader interested in helping. SPORTS Soccer (Mr. Gregory ) This program is open to students who would like to sharpen their playing skills. Beginning in March, the program will be run indoors in the gym until June. Homeroom competition is the format for 5th, 6th, and 7th graders. Basketball (Mr. Hay ) This program is open to students who would like to sharpen their playing skills while competing on grade level teams. Games will be held both before and after school from December through February. Appropriate physical education dress is required. Floor Hockey (Mr. Gregory/Mr. Hay ) This program provides an opportunity for students to sharpen their hockey skills in a competitive team arrangement. Games are played in the gym before school from November through May. Softball (Mrs. Schels) This program is open to students who would like to sharpen their softball skills. Teams are organized on a grade level basis. Games are held twice a week from April through June. There may be some meetings in the fall. Golf (Mr. Gregory/Mr. Hay ) This club provides an opportunity for students to learn the basic fundamentals and etiquette of golf. Activities include practice at a driving range and putting green, as well as playing at a "pitch-and-putt" course. This club is offered during the spring. Ski Club (Mrs. J. Gregory) This club is designed to offer members an opportunity to experience a winter sport they can enjoy all their lives. No skiing experience or equipment is necessary to join. Preparation begins in October and the season lasts as long as the snow. The club arranges supervision, lessons and rentals at various ski areas. The club meets after school when necessary for planning the trips.
